When The Rock entered into WWF roster as Rocky Maivia, the response he usually got from the people was a level below what Roman Reigns was getting 4 years ago. He was close to getting that but never got on that level because he was never featured in the main event or a major feud. Fast forward to 2 years later in 1998, no one ever knew that the guy who people wanted to get off the TV would be crowned as the Top Guy in the biggest wrestling promotion in the world.
The night was Survivor Series 1998 in St. Louis, MO. The WWF Championship was vacant for almost more than 2 months. WWF decided to do a tournament named “Deadly Games” which would crown the WWF Champion. The Rock defeated Big Boss Man, Ken Shamrock, and The Undertaker to get to the finals.
The final match was between The Rock and Mankind. They battled each other for more than 20 minutes. The finish of the match was a worked copy of “The Montreal Screwjob” in St. Louis which turned The Rock heel and made him the WWF Champion and a co-leader of The Corporation.
They know the fact that you were in a “Get off my TV” category and to know that later you will be the poster boy of the company is insane for any wrestler. The Rock never looked down. He worked through all the troubles whether it was in the ring or behind the curtain. The Rock becoming the WWF Champion and turning into a position where he should have been from the start as far as booking goes was the greatest moment of his career.
