Phantoms Braunschweig: Schröder started playing Professional Basketball in his country, Germany. In 2010 he played for SG Braunschweig, who is a farm team of the Phantoms. After a good season, he was promoted to the main team where he played until 2013.
In the 2012-13 season, he was named the League’s Most Improved Player as well as Best Young German Player. In 2013, Before officially playing at the Nike Hoop Summit, Schröder decided to declare for the 2013 NBA draft.
Atlanta Hawks: On the 27th of June, 2013, Schröder was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as a Round 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft. He spent time in the NBA Development League in 2013, with the Bakersfield Jam before returning to the Hawks in 2014.
On December 22, 2014, Schröder scored a career-high 22 points (at that time) in a 105-102 win over the Dallas Mavericks and also participated in the Rising Stars Challenge that year. Schröder had a “breakout year” in 2014-15, where his stats improved very much. He averaged 10.0 points and had 4.1 assists in 19.7 minutes per game, appearing in 77 regular-season games with 10 starts.
By 2018, he was an established player with the Hawks. On March 20, 2018, he set a new career-high for the Hawks with 41 points in a 99-94 win over the Utah Jazz. He was traded out of the team after the season ended.
